Boating in the Cape Coral Area

Boating in the Cape Coral Area

You just rented a vacation home in Cape Coral und would also like to rent a boat?

No problem at all! Boat rentals are offered by different companies in Cape Coral, Fort Myers or Fort Myers Beach, where you will find the perfect vessel for your boating trips.

Rental periods are flexible. Boats can be rented from half-days up to several weeks at a time.

In Florida, no boating license is required for renting or driving a boat.

However, several rules must observed to fully enjoy boating in Florida:

  • Boats don't have brakes: braking is done by either reducing the boat's speed or by putting the boat into reverse.
  • Always pay close attention to the red and green markers that indicate the navigable waterways—particularly in Cape Coral and Fort Myers—or you may risk running aground on one of the many shoals. Running aground can cause the propeller blades to bend and ruin the boat propeller.
  • As a rule of thumb, all navigable waterways are located between red and green markers. However, please bear in mind, that the colors may “switch sides”, depending on whether you are driving on intra-coastal Waterways or in open waters. In any case, it is vital, that you ask your boat rental service to explain the handling of the boat as well as the handling of the “navigation charts” (the maps on which the waterways are outlined).
  • A word of warning regarding shoals: You should never solely rely on any bathometers or depth gauges your boat may have. Due to the climatic conditions in Florida, these devices do not always work properly. In case of doubt, your safest bet is to drive slower rather than faster and to keep an eye on your surroundings, to be able to spot shallow waters early on.
  • In addition, always adhere to the waterway speed limits. For example, always drive slowly and carefully in specially marked “manatee zones” to avoid hurting one of the Florida manatees. All canals in Cape Coral have special “no wake” zones and speeds, to prevent boats docked at the shore from being damaged by passing vessels.
  • A word about fuel/gas consumption: Compared to cars, motor boats consume a relatively high amount of gas, so you should always keep the location of the next gas station in the back of your mind.

Of course, this doesn't mean that boating is all about slowly chugging along the shore. On the contrary—in many areas, especially the stretch between Sanibel and Captiva Islands and Pine Island, you can cruise at faster speeds on the mostly flat waters, as conditions permit.

Here, some areas are exclusively dedicated to water-skiing. Sections that are especially suitable for or solely dedicated to water-skiing are, in part, marked on the navigation charts. San Carlos Bay, overlooking the mainland south of Sanibel Island, is one of those areas.
