Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park

Wakulla Springs State Park, Florida

The Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park is home to one of the world's largest and deepest freshwater springs.

The springs are the origin of the Wakulla River, which meanders south through cypress-lined swamps, where it flows into St. Marks River after about 10 miles (16 km).

Its crystal-clear waters make Wakulla River one of the most popular canoeing and kayaking spots in Florida.

At Wakulla Springs State Park, daily riverboat tours provide an insight into Florida's unspoiled nature. Once in a while, you can watch alligators or turtles basking in the sun. In addition, glass-bottom boat tours are perfect for discovering Wakulla Springs' underwater habitats.

The nature trails in the upper part of the park meander through approximately 7413 acres (3000 hectares) of pristine forest. With over 180 species of birds, Wakulla Springs is the perfect place to observe local bird life. Many migratory birds stay at the state park during the winter months.

The Wakulla Springs Lodge was built in 1937. The upscale building with its elegant interior is located right at the springs. Despite a number of safety-related changes, Wakulla Springs Lodge still retains its original charm.

Wakulla Springs State Park has the usual amenities, such as picnic and barbeque areas. Several hiking trails provide an opportunity to explore the state park on foot, including a "Six Mile" hiking trail.

Swimming is only permitted in specially designated areas in the vicinity of the springs. The diving and observation platform in the upper part of the springs offers a magnificent view of the surrounding areas.

In addition, the park offers a lot of guided educational and adventure tours.

Several movie classics, including "Tarzan", starring Johnny Weissmüller, "Airport 77" and the horror movie "Creature from the Black Lagoon" from 1953, were filmed at the park.
