St. Petersburg / Tampa

Pier of St. Petersburg, Florida

St. Petersburg has always been the opposite of Tampa. St. Petersburg is a laid-back city with a reputation for accommodating well-off pensioners. This reputation, however, has changed. The buildings in downtown St. Petersburg sport modern facades; restaurants and cocktail bars are trying to attract a younger clientele.

Visitors can take a stroll along St. Petersburg's harbor promenade. The upside-down pyramid at “The Pier” accommodates a restaurant, an observation terrace and the “Isle of Nations” shopping plaza.

The “Bounty II,” a 123-foot (40 m)-long replica of the world-famous sailing ship—once under the command of the infamous Captain Bligh, until one of his officers, Fletcher Christian, instigated a mutiny—is permanently docked in Vinoy Basin. For the shooting of the MGM movie “Mutiny on the Bounty”, starring Marlon Brando as mutineer, this replica sailed from Nova Scotia to Tahiti.

The elegant shops and the Plaza Mall give St. Petersburg's Beach Drive a European flair.

The Salvador Dali Museum next to the Bayboro Bay University campus opened its doors in 1982. It contains the largest collection of paintings by Salvador Dali.

The St. Petersburg Historical Museum is located in the immediate vicinity and exhibits art produced by local indigenous tribes.

Every year in February, many world-class sailing boats that participate in the Southern Ocean Racing Conference are docked at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. The 370-mile (595-km)-long race starts at Pinellas Point in St. Petersburg and continues via Fort Lauderdale at the East coast of Florida to Nassau on the Bahamas. Small regattas, test races and, of course, parties, take place several weeks prior to this long-distance sailing event.

The seaside resorts of St. Petersburg Beach and Madeira Beach are located on offshore islands west of St. Petersburg, opposite the Gulf of Mexico. Clearwater, one of Florida's main seaside resorts, has a perfect infrastructure and beautiful beaches.

St. Petersburg Beach and Madeira Beach offer dolphin-watching tours. In addition, visitors can also book snorkeling or diving tours in Madeira Beach.
