Key West, Florida

After driving approximately 180 miles from Miami via Key Largo and other Florida islands, or "Keys", you reach Key West.

In Key West, time seems to pass more slowly than in the rest of the United States. The locals have a distinctively relaxed way of life. You can explore many of the surroundings on foot or, for even more relaxed exploring, take the Conch Tour Train across the island.

Walking across the island is certainly worth your while, because you can see many of the older houses that were built in Southern colonial or Art Deco style.

The beaches at the southern tip of Key West are also worth a visit.

If you'd rather be more mobile, you can explore the island by scooter. Scooters can be rented around Mallory Square, where the Key West Shipwreck Museum is located.

Or you can explore the waters around Key West on a catamaran or a glass-bottom boat. The landing piers of cruise line ships attract numerous artists and street performers show off their trade.

The many souvenir shops on Duval Street and surrounding blocks invite you to take a leisurely stroll through this area. The cozy restaurants and rustic bars in Key West, such as Sloppy Joes Bar, offer a variety of local fare.

Writer Ernest Hemingway was one of the most famous inhabitants of Key West, where he spent many years of his life. During this time, he wrote classics such as "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1940). A walk through the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum provides a distinctive insight into the life of this famous writer.

Many bars in Key West claim to have been Hemingway's favorite local bar. The most well-known one, however, is probably Sloppy Joe's on Duval street. At night, many talented bands perform live at Sloppy Joes.

Apart from the live performances, the food and drinks at Sloppy Joe's are not to be missed. Before enjoying a drink at one of the many bars, people mingle every afternoon at the waterfront restaurants at Mallory Square at the northern end of Duval Street to celebrate the sunset to the sounds of reggae music.
